A Colourful Welcome for Cavalry Primary School, March 🌈✏️

In late 2025, we had the absolute pleasure of completing one of our most joyful projects to date – a bespoke picket fence installation for Cavalry Primary School here in March, Cambs, right at the front of the school around their grassed area.

The brief was simple but brilliant: create something bright, fun and welcoming for the children, staff and parents. Our solution? A custom-made picket fence designed to look like giant coloured pencils – and the results speak for themselves.

Handcrafted, Hand-Painted, and Made with Care

The fence consisted of nearly 300 individual timber palings, each one carefully cut and shaped to resemble the tip of a pencil. To achieve the vibrant finish, every paling was undercoated in white first, then hand-painted in one of six bold colours:

• Red

• Orange

• Yellow

• Green

• Blue

There were a lot of early mornings involved getting these painted. At one point, our workshop was completely taken over – palings everywhere you looked, stacked, drying, leaning… it was colourful chaos in the best possible way!

Installation Day – A Little Weekend Sneak-In

With the posts and rails installed in advance, we planned the final installation carefully to minimise disruption. Early on a Saturday morning, we quietly “snuck” onto site and got to work fixing all the painted palings in place.

By the time we packed up, the transformation was complete – ready and waiting for the big reveal on Monday morning.

And what a surprise it was.

A Transformation We’re Proud Of

Seeing the finished fence in place, framing the green space and instantly lifting the whole entrance to the school, made all the hard work worth it. The colours pop, the pencil shapes bring a sense of creativity and fun, and the area now feels safe, defined and welcoming.

We genuinely love how this project turned out, and it’s safe to say this one is right up there as one of our favourite projects we’ve ever been involved in.
